Tinubu, Shehu Sani name Uba Sani among democracy heroes

President Bola Ahmad Tinubu has lauded the role of Uba Sani in the struggle to free citizens from the shackles of military dictatorship. “Sani protested against military authoritarians in Nigeria, and left behind a footprint of bravery and patriotism,” he said, adding, “Riding on his organisation and networking skills, he created a strategic base for the pro-democracy movements in Northern Nigeria, using his civil society organisation, the Movement for Freedom and Justice.” President Tinubu further said that Uba Sani deployed his resources to champion the rights of the underprivileged and offered them unfettered access to justice.

The president made the remark at an event marking Democracy Day at the State House, Abuja. “At different times, he was the National Vice Chairman (North) of Campaign for Democracy (CD) and Deputy National Chairman (North) of the Joint Action Committee (JACON) led by Fawehinmi,” Tinubu added.

Also speaking on the issue, veteran human rights activist and former Senator, Malam Shehu Sani, said this about Sen. Uba Sani: “Mr. President, even though the Governor of Kaduna State removed me from the seat, I would always remember that he was one of those who stood for us when we were in prison. He was among those who kept the torch of freedom alive while many of us languished in the cell.”
